Youth council gains new lease of life
MONDAY night was the first meeting of the year for Gladstone's youth council.
The decision to re-form the Gladstone Youth Council was prompted by Mayor Gail Sellers.
"By establishing a formal committee such as the Gladstone Youth Council, the expectation is that council can improve its engagement of young people and seek their input across a range of areas," Cr Sellers said.
The nine members, including chairperson Sarah Janson, deputy chairperson Lachlan Muller and general members Katie Jayne Morgan; Louise Van Wyk; Bonnie Lawler; Zac Smith; Christopher Ibell; Erin Deardon; and Benjamin Govan all made the decision to stay on for this year.
Committee member, 17-year-old Louise Van Wyk, said it was good to catch up with everyone after a four-month gap and discuss important issues.
"We had two briefings last night one about the new profiling system for the council website and the other was about Gladstone library square redo," she said.
Miss Van Wyk said the team was in talks about how to turn the space into something useful.
"We are looking at it as a youth space, but the public in attendance suggested we need a hang out space for another age group perhaps," she said.
"At the end of the week we'll submit our ideas to the planning department."
Personally, Miss Van Wyk said she'd like to see the youth council branch out to more communities around the region.
