Youngsters to tee off
GOLF: Fresh from getting selected in the Queensland primary School 10-12 boy's team which will compete in Adelaide in December, Gladstone's Declan Corke is setting his sights this weekend.
The promising youngster will compete in both the Miriam Vale Junior Golf Championships tomorrow and the Gladstone Junior Golf Open on Sunday.
Declan is expected to hit the course running after he finished fifth at the Queensland School Sport 10-19 years Girls and Boys Golf State Championships last week.
He will tee off from 9.20am tomorrow in Miriam Vale and from 7.46am in Gladstone in the 18-hole category.
Fellow Gladstone golfer Oscar McBean is hoping for a brace of wins or runner-up tomorrow and Sunday.
"I have been trying to get my driving straight and practising with my putting,” Oscar, 11, said.
Oscar works on his game after school most Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays before regular club games each Sunday.
Gladstone Junior Golf Club president Derran Corke said Sunday's event is also a ticket for the better-performers to play in another December event on the Gold Coast.
"This event on Sunday is a Greg Norman Junior Masters qualifier for the December event at the Palmer Golf Club,” Corke said.
Gladstone, BITS and Miriam Vale Golf Clubs will be well represented with 21, eight and seven golfers respectively to represent these clubs
"There will be three, six, nine, 13 and the full 18-hole categories and the players are based on ability and not by age,” Corke said.
He the course will be in great condition aided by the long spell of fine weather.
Corke said that Yeppoon's Ben Swaffield and Cap Coast's Ben Scott will be hard to beat on the weekend.
"They are both very low handicappers,” he said.
