GLADSTONE woman Tanya Dawson knows the struggle of being overweight. At her heaviest, the 26-year-old was 108kg.

Today she's proud to say she weighs just 77kg.

Growing up in town, Ms Dawson said her whole family was overweight.

"(We ate a) lot of carbs and just portions that were too big," she said.

"I grew up overweight as a kid and then left school and put on even more weight."

Ms Dawson tried dieting and acupuncture to lose weight, but got serious about the mission in January last year.

"I signed up at Yaralla and started going at the start of the year, and half way through (got) really committed and that was when I really started to lose the weight."

Ms Dawson now goes to gym every day, notching up 10 hours of training a week.

"You just have to put other areas of your life on hold for a bit. It takes time and effort," she said.

Focusing on diet is also a key factor.

"I think a lot of it comes down to eating more than exercise," Ms Dawson said.

"Get active with your kids. (Know that) what you eat, they will eat."

The pay off is motivating her to reach a goal of 68kg.

"I enjoy being able to just do stuff physically. I'm not limited with carrying groceries or having a game of footy."
