You have 24 hours, how will you spend it?

24 hours.

Every person is given 24 hours each day and it is up to them how they spend it.

It is one of the only equal things among people and doesn't differ no matter their age, gender, race or religion.

Think about the last 24 hours you just had; did you learn anything new? Did you try anything new? Did it make you happy? Or was it a waste of a day?

In life you are faced with many choices, those choices give you opportunities, the opportunities give you experiences and the experiences make you the person you are today.

Make every hour count; work hard for things you want, make choices that make you happy, make your dreams come true.

My name is Jessie Gretener and I am 15 years old from the Sunshine Coast, Australia.

In October 2012,  I began embarking on an adventure which I have been dreaming of for since I was six and have now made it a reality.

I am leaving my family, friends and everything normal for three and a half months; travelling around the world by myself.

London, Paris, New York? Check! As well as many other places all throughout Switzerland, Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy and the United States.

Teenagers say "When I leave school I want to be…. " - though why not start now? What is stopping you? I want to be a Travel Journalist, and I am not waiting until I graduate to begin finding opportunities; I am finding opportunities now.

I want to be somewhere new every 24 hours, immersing myself in different cultures, having as many experiences as I can and reporting stories to people as I explore the world. Wanderlust is my word and I want to inspire and represent youth travel.

The most common reaction to my adventure I get is "You're so lucky!"

Although luck didn't get me there, hundreds of hours of work and dedicating everything is what bought me this opportunity.

I made choices; I chose to work for five hours after school and on weekends rather than go to the shops, I chose to save my money instead of spending it on a cute dress, I chose to take advice from others, I chose to work hard for the things I want.

Luck hasn't given me this opportunity, hard work has.

Think of your dream; a travel opportunity? A new job? Something you want to buy? No matter what your dream is, make choices that will bring you towards that dream, work hard and you can achieve it!

Now do me a favour, reflect on how you spend each of your 24 hours; Is it what you want? Are you achieving your dreams? Are you happy? If not, do something about it! Live your life the way you want to, not the way others tell you to.

In the end, do you want to be known as someone who sat in an office their whole life living the same day to day life or do you want to be known as someone who volunteered in Africa, or who sailed around the world, or who explored the world. It's your choice and as long as it makes you happy, it is the right one.

We will be posting regular blogs from Jessie in our travel section so look out for her.
