EDITORIAL: Yasi’s lessons hard won

CYCLONE Yasi.

It's a name etched into the hearts and memories of everyone who has an affinity with North Queensland.

Certainly before Yasi we had seen some mean and nasty cyclones - look at Larry, for instance - but this was something else.

In its wake, this horrendous storm left a scale of destruction the likes of which is not often seen - not even in a part of the country which had become pretty used to big blows, storm surges and battening down the hatches.

The sound. The destruction. The aftermath.

Five years on and still there are scars.

Some will never recover.

Some will never rebuild.

And for some, the sound of the cyclone media siren, the sound of heavy rain and the sound of howling wind will forever be a stinging reminder of so much lost and destroyed.

This year we have had a pretty quiet start to cyclone season.

El Nino has played its role in keeping the storms at bay, wreaking havoc on our weather patterns and ocean temperatures. But the season isn't over yet and whether we have one, or half a dozen, storms brewing over the Coral Sea in the months to come, there is one simple message we need all keep in mind: cyclones are dangerous. We need to be prepared. We cannot afford to be complacent.

It only takes one. Cyclone Yasi was not your average cyclone. But there is no way of knowing what is - and this storm is a perfect example of how quickly things can change. Simply: be prepared.
