Xenophon calls for inquiry into dual nationality laws

INDEPENDENT Senator Nick Xenophon wants an inquiry to investigate the proposed laws designed to strip dual-nationality terror supporters of their Australian citizenship.

The proposed laws would grant the immigration minister the discretion to strip dual nationals of their citizenship and their right to return home if they were deemed to be involved in terrorism, even if they had not been convicted of an offence.

But the government deferred plans contained in the proposal to strip citizenship of sole nationals after a cabinet backlash.

The government is expected to introduce the proposed laws into parliament over the next fortnight.

Labor has previously expressed its in-principle support for the proposal.
