WATCH: Wow, what an epic way to start the league season
RUGBY LEAGUE: Tannum Sands's Jyde Dwyer had the best home-coming one could wish for.
The CQ Capras-listed speedster scored the game-levelling try against a gallant Gladstone Valleys and his team-mate Kyle Montga truly converted to give Seagulls a memorable 32-30 win at Dennis Park.
It was a game which ebbed and flowed with the lead changing at least a dozen times in what was a classic.
Dwyer's third try resulted from a high kick which evaded the Valleys defenders and he was at the right place at the right time at full-time.
To be fair neither team deserved to lose. Both put in a show in a classic derby.
New Tannum coach Craig Karakyriacos said his heart raced.
"Mate, she was nerve-wrecking coming into it being the first game," a jubilant Karakyriacos said.
"To get the monkey off our back and it was good to get Jyde back and he was a big part.
"But a lot of our boys dug in and got us across the line."
Valleys did look the better team early in the game and it effectively produced a two-try turnaround when a chain of passes between Jaiden Richards, Jai Parter and Michael Ruge resulted in a Darren Hodges try.
The visitors led by 12-10 at half-time and that exte
nded to 18-10 at the start of the second half after Hau'Fanga Rabakewa pierced through for a try and young gun Mason Collette converted.
But sticking with the game of twists and turns, Dwyer absorbed a Rabakewa hit to snare his second as the lead changed a few more times. Even when James Little used produced two brutal hits for Tannum, Valleys responded with a second try to Hodges.
Hodges then produced his third try just minutes before Dwyer seized on his moment of brilliance.
