World title bout step closer
THE WBU world title fight between Perth's Mark Demori and "Dangerous" Damon Reed of the United States is one step closer to being held in Gladstone in March.
Anthony Coleiro has been working hard to host this fight, and on Wednesday received some promising support.
"We held an information night on Wednesday," he said.
"Representatives from Buel were in attendance, showing their keen interest in supporting this high-level event.
"Buel are going to pay for Demori's flights, as well as the accommodation for four of the contestants. This is a huge support, but we do need more."
Coleiro is so confident the region will support his bid to host the fight in Gladstone he has locked in a date.
"The 17th of March is the allocated date for the fight. And it is going to happen," he said.
"The venue is still being sourced, but we are hoping to hold it at Tannum High School.
"So really at this stage things are on track. We just need sponsors."
Demori's time in Gladstone will not be limited to the ring, with discussions at schools and possibly businesses scheduled.
"Buel has also come on board to sponsor Demori's school presentations," Coleiro said.
"He will be visiting six schools in the area presenting his 'How to be successful in sport and life' message. He is interesting and motivating. He involves the crowd and makes his presentations personal. He has a great story about success and the challenges behind the not-so-easy road to your dreams, goals and aspirations.
"If companies are interested in Mark Demori speaking to their employees this can be organised via sponsorship and contacting me."
Coleiro will be ensuring the sporting groups playing key roles in organising the event are rewarded.
"At this stage all proceeds from the event will go to event expenses, which is thousands," he said.
"What's left over will go to the Gladstone Mudcrabs senior and junior football clubs, Island Sands Boxing Club and Mick Daly's Junior Boxing Club.
"I have managed to secure the services of Russell Thompson from Island Sands Boxing Gym in Tannum and Mick Daly from Daly's gym in Gladstone to give me help leading up to the big night. Gladstone Mudcrabs have also offered help with catering, bar staff and security."
As well as the title fight there will be seven supporting fights, including two World Boxing Union Australasian titles. One will be a heavyweight fight and the other will be a cruiserweight title featuring Coleiro.
