World-class design firm to build Mackay's ring road

AECOM has been involved in rebuilding America's One World Trade Center and the construction of skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi.

Now they will design Mackay's ring road.

The global company's Brisbane-based team had won the tender for the detailed design of the massive project, Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said.

To design a project of such magnitude, the tender would have had to have gone to a "top quality" organisation with "experience in large-scale infrastructure projects", Mr Christensen said.

"We put the project out to tender in December last year," he said.

"AECOM is one that many people will recognise, as they are a global company that does this type of work."

He said the design work would take at least a year and even up to 18 months to finish.

"It's the biggest infrastructure project we've seen in the Mackay region," Mr Christensen said.

"It's a big job and at the end of this work we'll be able to hit the go button on creating 600 jobs."

Mr Christensen said he hoped construction could begin earlier than the scheduled 2017.

"All the money is locked in," he said.

"It's not without its challenges but we will get there. We've said we were going to get the ring road done... we're getting it done."

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said safety would be a benefit of the road.

"When completed, the Mackay Ring Road will reduce the amount of heavy vehicles carrying hazardous loads through built-up areas and improve efficiency and safety on the highway."

RING ROAD PLANS

  •  Stage 1 includes an 11.3km two-lane rural highway bypass with 14 bridges
  •  The ring road is $565 million project
  •  Construction for Stage 1 is expected to start in 2017 and will take about two years to complete
  •  Geo-technical testing of soil has also been done on site
