Workplace win as Grill'd agrees to review wages
BURGER chain Grill'd has announced it will change its pay rates after a former Tannum Sands girl launched legal action against the business.
Kahlani Pyrah, 20, worked at a Grill'd store in Camberwell, Melbourne, before being sacked.
She alleges she was sacked for challenging the below-award wages and conditions at Grill'd.
Grill'd founder Simon Crowe on Thursday said the chain would review its pay agreements, which are based on outdated employment agreements.
Hospitality union United Voice welcomed the move.
Victorian secretary Jess Walsh said: "This is a real win. It happened because our courageous member Kahlani Pyrah took the gutsy decision to speak out. It is now abundantly clear why she was sacked.
"Mr Crowe says he wants to 'modernise' his workplace agreements. We look forward to working with Grill'd to do just that."
Ms Walsh said staff should receive the weekend and evening rates they were entitled to under the award.
"If Mr Crowe is serious about modernising his workplace culture, then he will also ensure our member Kahlani Pyrah is immediately re-instated, and acknowledged for the positive role she has played bringing these issues to light."
More than 22,000 people signed a petition to have Ms Pyrah reinstated.
Ms Pyrah is due in court again on Friday as part of an unlawful dismissal case against Grill'd, after her case was adjourned on Monday.
