Wood tuning up for tough regional meet

NICHOLAS Wood is a shot put and discus specialist so a pentathlon stretches the ability of the Gladstone Little Athletics competitor.

Running, jumping and combining both for hurdles is not in his comfort zone.

The five-event schedule features only one event he loves.

"I only get to do shot put. I have three track events which I never look forward to," he said.

It is not that the 17-year-old Wood is way out of his depth with the other events, giving them a go every Saturday morning at regular Little Athletics days.

One positive of the pentathlon was having another competitor in his age group to measure up to.

"It is mainly just me in my age group locally," he said. "This time I have someone to compete with.

"He is better at some events and I am better at others."

Where Wood really wants to be better is at regionals in February when he will only take on the events he selects.

What comes after that, he does not know, starting Year 12 studies and also chasing an apprenticeship.

"Hopefully I keep going, it depends on work though," he said. "I play soccer too during the winter.

"I don't mind doing both, as long as I have time."
