Woman held hostage, sexually assaulted by taxi driver

BREAKING: A taxi driver accused of groping a female passenger in a terrifying incident in Toowoomba overnight will today face court in custody.

The man, 35, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and deprivation of liberty after allegedly groping a woman in a car in Kearneys Spring about 6pm Wednesday.

The terrifying incident unfolded after a 22-year-old woman called the man she knew to be a taxi driver in Toowoomba for a lift from a home in Kearneys Spring.

The woman told police she first became concerned when the man arrived in a personal vehicle, not a marked cab, but had been convinced to get in the car by the driver.

The woman again became concerned when the driver took "roads she thought were strange" before the driver pulled over the vehicle.

The man then allegedly sexually assaulted the woman who tried to flee the vehicle when he locked the doors, trapping her inside.

The man then drove a short distance before pulling over again when he is alleged to have assaulted the woman a second time.

The woman managed to flee the car and reported the incident to police.

The man was arrested a short time later.

Darling Downs Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said people need to be mindful of their own personal safety, and to trust their instincts.

"In this particular case the woman had concerns but went against her instincts," he said.

"If people do have a feeling that things aren't what they should be, they should trust their instincts."

The man was arrested soon after the incident and remains in custody, due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.

Police will object to any bail application.
