Mum moved to tears as William, 5, heads to school

WITH his brand new school bag carefully placed on a classroom hook, five-year-old William Brook gave mum a cheery kiss goodbye and entered his new world.

No tears from this brave lad on his first day in Prep at Chancellor State School, but his mum Vikki admitted it was an emotional experience and she welled up when it was time for parents to leave.

It was a similar scene across the Coast as schools opened their gates to returning and new pupils.

Official figures for student numbers in 2015 won't be known until next week, but last year, 3134 Preps started school on the Sunshine Coast from a grand total of 37,201 enrolled in all age groups and school categories.

For parents of Preps the first school day is one of mixed emotions as their little ones take a significant life leap.

"This first school day has come around very quickly, so we were both a bit nervous, but William seemed to settle in quite well," Ms Brook, of Sippy Downs, said of her only child.

"He was very involved with getting his uniform ready and picking out a school backpack, and I'm sure there'll be some stories and names of new friends when I pick him up after his first day."

Ms Brook said there were other first-time school mums commiserating with each other as they said their goodbyes.
