How to beat the winter skin blues
DOES your skin feel dry? A little rough to the touch? Taut or dull?
If so, you might have a case of the winter skin blues (WSB).
Although winter technically begins tomorrow, the cold changes that are already in the air can dry out your skin very rapidly, according to Cheryl Hopkins from Be Pampered Health & Beauty in Gladstone.
“Skin can get very dry during the winter months, especially if you don't have a great home treatment plan,” Ms. Hopkins said. “The one thing I would like to stress is that skin care does not have to be complicated.”
The trick to avoiding a case of the WSB is to get into a regular routine of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising.
“Our lifestyles don't allow us the luxury of standing in front of a mirror applying a hundred and one different products,” Ms. Hopkins said. “Your home care can be very basic, but it must start with good products. Normal soap doesn't cut it anymore, in fact, it can have even more of a drying effect on your skin.”
Your daily anti-WSB routine should start in the morning with a gentle exfoliation. “Most exfoliants should be used in the morning to remove the dead skin cells that build up overnight,” Ms Hopkins said. “Then use a daily hydrating moisturiser, preferably with SPF.”
Interestingly, Ms Hopkins said one of the most important aspects of winter skin care was the application of sun-block, whether you work outdoors or in air-conditioning.
“Sun blocks don't have to be heavy zinc creams, and these days you can purchase light tinted moisturisers that contain SPF 15+ or even SPF 30+. Wearing sun-block prevents your skin from drying out and also protects you from UV rays of the sun as well as certain UV lights inside,” she said.
Other tips Ms Hopkins had to keep your skin looking and feeling great during winter should be followed before you hop under the blankets at night time.
“At night, a good cleanser will remove your make-up and can be applied in the shower. Then apply a good night cream with at least 10% glycolic acid. This helps gently exfoliate, promotes cell renewal and stimulates collagen production overnight,” she said.
It doesn't matter what brand you buy or use to combat WSB, as long as they are of high quality.
