'Winter is coming': Why you need to know this skin secret

A FAMOUS quote from popular television show once said, "Winter is coming," and for us Gladstone folk it's definitely true.

With cold dry weather comes dry, flaky skin. But there's one completely natural solution you can use to make sure you skin stays on top, according to Gladstone beauty therapist Kathleen Andrews.

Ms Andrews says:

Green tea is full of rich anti-oxidants, is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and has anti carcinogenic properties which all offer positive benefits for your skin.

Green tea also contains 'catechins' which have some biological properties. Research has found green tea can be used as a disinfectant in hand wash to prevent flu transmission.

It contains a high amount of antioxidants as well as enzymes, amino acids, and phytochemicals like polyphenols.

It also has B vitamins, folate, manganese, potassium, magnesium and caffeine. Green tea improves your skin complexion and makes your skin healthy.

It helps flush out toxins from the skin, heals blemishes and scars, and reduces inflammation. It even improves the skin's elasticity.

A 2003 study by the Medical College of Georgia showed that green tea aids skin rejuvenation.

The following green tea mask soothes redness, refreshes your skin and can help reduce pimples. Keep any left overs in a small jar in the fridge to pop onto any pimples that may occur.

Green Tea Face Mask

  1. Pop 2 green tea bags into a cup and just cover them with water or better still make a cup of tea.  Squeeze the teabags to remove as much water as possible.  Cut them open and scrape out the damp tea leaves into a small bowl.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of raw honey.
  3. Add ½ teaspoon of lemon juice and mix well.
  4. Apply it on your face and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  6. Use this face mask once or twice a week.

Green tea also makes an awesome spritzer and can be used as a refreshing toner. Simply make a cup of green tea, let it sit for ½ hour then pop it into a spray bottle, top up with water and voila!

A calming spritzer which can be carried in your handbag, use it after any exercise to refresh yourself, your skin will love you.
