Wimbledon warm-up goes awry for Kyrgios

TENNIS: Nick Kyrgios' Wimbledon hopes are under a cloud after a nasty mid-match fall left the Australian with a fresh injury.

Kyrgios slipped heavily after attempting to plant his right foot to move to his backhand in the ninth game of his opening-round match at Queen's Club against Donald Young.

The world No.20 clutched initially at his bandaged right knee but he was treated on court after a lengthy delay for left hip soreness.

Kyrgios managed to play on for three more games and then a tiebreak, but it was clear he was in no condition to continue.

After losing the tiebreak 7-3, Kyrgios walked to his chair, packed his racquet bag and returned to Young's side of the net to shake hands and concede the match to the American.

The injury happened only two days after Kyrgios declared himself pain-free for the first time in seven months.

It appeared the slippery grass, just beyond the baseline, was a contributing factor.

Kyrgios appeared at the Queen's Club Championships with his right knee bandaged.

He had two injections - one to his left hip, the other to his right shoulder - after losing in the second round of the French Open.

Kyrgios has two weeks to recover for Wimbledon, which starts on July 3.
