Why you might want to delete an electricity bill on email

A MAROOCHYDORE woman has urged other Coast residents to be wary of an email scam involving fake AGL electricity bills.

The woman, who asked not to be named, received a bill last Friday for $460, allegedly from AGL.

However, she was immediately suspicious because she said she had never supplied her email address to AGL and the bill was far in excess of her normal bill.

She immediately deleted the email and rang AGL, where an automated recording warns customers about an email scam.

The woman said she was annoyed about being targeted by the scammers "because I'm careful who I give me email address to".

"They are just trying to make a lot of money. I don't know if you click on the thing - there were all sorts of things to click on - and they find out more about you, or if it goes when you're trying to pay your bill," she said.

"I wasn't going to click on anything."

AGL, in a recorded message for customers, says it is aware that some people have been targeted with fraudulent emails claiming to be from AGL about a gas or electricity account.

The recording says customers' details have not been stolen from AGL and the recipients are being randomly targeted.

AGL's website shows examples of scam emails and urges anyone receiving a suspicious email not to click on any links within the email and to to delete it straight away.

AGL has reported the scam email to the Scamwatch, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and the Australian Federal Police.

Consumers wishing to see what a genuine AGL Energy e-bill looks like versus a hoax email or more information on the scam can visit the website: www.agl.com.au.

Anyone with further concerns relating to this scam can contact Scamwatch on 1300 795 995 or visit www.scamwatch.gov.au or contact AGL on 131 245.

The Maroochydore customer urged people to be very careful if they saw an unfamiliar bill from AGL in their inbox.

"You've got to be on the ball. It's too easy for people who are sick or in a hurry to get caught," she said.

"Life is so hard for so many people without them being ripped off."
