Why The Wrong Girl is right for Jessica Marais

AFTER a run of serious roles, Jessica Marais is excited to embrace her goofy side in The Wrong Girl.

The Logie winner stars in and produces the new romantic comedy, a small screen adaptation of the best-selling book.

Marais, who rose to fame on Seven's hit family drama Packed to the Rafters, plays morning TV show producer Lily Woodward, who finds herself torn between two men.

"I'd read the book and all my girlfriends had read the book and loved it," Marais tells APN's The Guide.

"There was a positive energy about it that spoke to me."

Author Zoe Foster-Blake encouraged Marais to make Lily her own and she hopes viewers embrace her sometimes awkward protagonist.

"In the book Lily's Eurasian, for one thing, and she's probably slightly less goofy than how I play Lily. That's been quite fun to play with," she says.

"For me she's incredibly different to Joan Miller (from Love Child) or Lily Diamond (from Magic City) or Rachel Rafter. She's got her own soul and energy."

At the heart of the show is Lily's friendship with her house mate and best friend Simone (Hayley Magnus).

"Simone is like a wild creature who is also vulnerable and fragile. She's a bit all over the place but Lily loves it about her," Marais says.

"There's a freedom to Simone that Lily finds very attractive. She also feels quite protective of her."

But things get awkward when Simone shows interest in Jack, a chef who stars in a new cooking segment on Lily's TV show.

Lily repressed her initial attraction to Jack (Rob Collins) for professional reasons but can't seem to get him out of her head.

"A guy can cloud a friendship," she says.

"I haven't been in that situation but it would be a difficult thing.

"Jack is the apple of Simone's eye when she first meets him and it's a hard thing for Lily to work around. When you repress feelings they spill out in other ways."

Things get even more complicated when Lily's long-time mate Pete (Ian Meadows) reveals he has feelings for her.

"Lily probably has feelings for Pete she didn't know she had. She's trying to figure out what real love is. Is it your best friend or is it the lightning moment when you're giddy around someone?"

The Wrong Girl premieres on Wednesday at 8.30pm on Channel 10.
