Why Morrison will win the next election

The Morrison Government will handsomely win the next election because Australia's fiscal and health response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been as good as anywhere in the world.

People vote for the political party that best lines their pockets. The rest is background noise, engineered by the Canberra bubble.

Voters can't even say debt, let alone use it as an excuse to not vote for a political party.

The Coalition has played Labor at its own game, promising the world and putting future generations into hock for years.

But who cares? it's only money. The Coalition also has the three best retail politicians in the country - Scott Morrison, Josh Frydenberg and Peter Dutton. On the other hand, Labor struggles with genuine performers. Australians will never flirt with a leader from Labor's left like Anthony Albanese. The left have abandoned workers to pursue ideological fantasy. As Margaret Thatcher often said, the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Compared to the halcyon era when Hawke and Keating were running the show, Labor seems bereft of true talent. Forget gender equity and quotas, stacking your Caucus with left-leaning lawyers and union lightweights is the real lack of diversity in politics.

As the Prime Minister said right from the start of the pandemic, the rule book on policy and reform has had to be thrown out with the country facing its greatest economic challenge in a century. Last Tuesday night's budget was a fiscal blueprint that Labor's Treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers would have had no qualms delivering.

It's smart politics and the LNP is clearly taking a leaf out of the Queensland Labor Government's book by paying no attention to debt. Keeping the elderly, the disadvantaged, women and tradies happy, the LNP is staking its re-election prospects on maintaining the fiscal momentum it has built over the past 12 months.

The policy wonks will point to some fairly optimistic assumptions around growth and unemployment, but the punters in the street don't pay much attention - until the assumptions are wrong and it comes back to bite them.

But right now, Australia is winning spectacularly and the Morrison Government has set that trajectory.

Morrison, from Sydney, is complex and has made some recent poor, reactionary judgment calls. But he's popular among thinking Aussies and is an outstanding campaigner.

Frydenberg, from Melbourne, is the obvious heir apparent to Morrison. He's blossomed as Treasurer, has a crazy work ethic and is now one of the nation's best performers.

Dutton, from Brisbane, will be Australia's best Defence Minister since Kim Beazley. He's already hit the ground running, gaining the confidence of the troops on the ground. Vastly experienced, Dutton has also played a pivotal behind the scenes role in the clean out of the dysfunctional Queensland branch of the LNP.

The Morrison-Frydenberg-Dutton triumvirate is a powerful and formidable combination, which will calmly guide the fortunes of the conservatives leading into the next election.

They make Labor's frontbench look decidedly second rate.
