Productivity Commission gets data from online comments

WHO knew that asking for online comments could be a good idea?

Following the lead set by media outlets, the Productivity Commission asked parents to detail their experiences for its investigation into child care and early learning.

It is examining how childcare helps workforce participation and whether it is keeping up with demand.

Aside from the usual formal submissions, this time the Commission was happily accepting comments made on their website - more than 700 flooded in.

In one, a parent describes the long childcare waiting lists in regional Queensland growing unhappy with the provider but left with no other choice.

They said without the government's child care rebate or child care benefit "I would have no choice but to either work full time and miss time with my daughter or I would have to give up my career and be a full-time carer".

The inquiry will make its final report before the end of October.
