No conviction for Frances Abbott scholarship whistleblower

WHISTLEBLOWER Freya Newman has escaped a conviction for leaking details of a $60,000 scholarship awarded to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's daughter.

Newman, 21, was yesterday given a two-year good behaviour bond after pleading guilty in September to accessing restricted data without authorisation.

She worked at the Whitehouse Institute of Design when she revealed Frances Abbott had won a scholarship which was not advertised to other students.

Activists carrying "Free Freya" signs rallied outside Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court yesterday.
