Whincup takes out fifth championship victory

RED Bull Racing Australia driver Jamie Whincup confirmed his status as a V8 legend by claiming a record-tying fifth championship title at the Sydney 500 yesterday.

But he did it with a few nervous moments, none more so than on the 64th lap.

The 30-year-old engaged in a tit-for-tat battle with Team BOC and Lockwood Racing's Jason Bright late during the last race, with both drivers making contact. Bright went close to hitting the wall, and subsequently T-boning Whincup and his championship hopes.

But Whincup hung on to finish third, in doing so winning the championship by 128 points over teammate Craig Lowndes.

Team TEKNO's Shane van Gisbergen won the final race of the weekend.

But the day belonged to Whincup, tying the late Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife as the only five-time title winners in Australian touring car history.
