Where in the world is Istanbul?

THE name Istanbul may sound familiar to you as it has been in the news for a number of terrorist attacks that have taken place there in recent times but do you know where it is?

If you were to travel from Brisbane, in a north-westerly direction for 14767 km you would arrive in Istanbul, the largest city in the country of Turkey.

Located in the north west of Turkey, Istanbul straddles the Bosporus Strait a 31-km-long waterway that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara.

Interestingly, Istanbul is the world's only city to occupy two different continents. The western part of the city lies in Europe and the eastern part is in Asia.

Istanbul is one of the most popular tourist cities in Turkey and possess an amazing cultural and architectural heritage.

Spread over 1812-square-kilometres of hilly terrain, the city is studded with nearly 20,000 cultural sites.
