Kart racing business opens in Gladstone

MORE than 100 people put their pedal to the metal at the opening weekend of Fastkarts in Gladstone.

The new kart hire business, running from the Gladstone Kart Track, held its first sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

With the arrival of P&O cruise passengers on Sunday, owner Johnny Grother was happy with the timing.

The professional kart racer said they received plenty of good feedback from the locals and tourists.

"I would've loved to have done this during the construction days of Gladstone, but it took a long time to get going unfortunately," Mr Grother said.

"It was really good to see the amount of support we had from both the locals and the tourists though.

"We did some big hours but when you're really passionate about something, you don't call it work, you just call it what you like doing.

"So the way I see it, I spent a lot of time doing what I like doing on the weekend."

Mr Grother has purchased 10 karts for hire, which can be used at day or night time.

"Our ultimate goal is to take this down the driver trainer path," Mr Grother said.

"We want school kids to get an appreciation for what it's like to be behind the wheel, before they get their license."

Fastkarts will be open again on the weekend of April 30 - May 1.
