Sailing club has great year as big race spikes interest

BY far and away, the Sydney to Hobart spikes interest in sailing across Australia more than any other sailing event, wowing the minds of the country with its magnificent spectacle - even if seen only through the images flashing by on the television screen.

There is little wrong with that, working the same way as the Australian Open for tennis or the Tour de France for cycling.

The truth is though, most of Australia is missing out.

Port Curtis Sailing Club has 147 sailing members and these are the people who know what the sport is about - not just for a few days of the year.

I was lucky enough to be invited out by one of those members, Tony Constance, to have a little excursion on his little beauty Intriigue.

Joined by the club president Lex Moran and another of the long term sailing lads (known as Slim), the boys let me know about the club and the splendid year the club has had so far.

"It has been great, we lost a few boats from last year with some people moving away," Constance said.

"It has been really good, though - we finish in May, so there is plenty of time for people to get involved."

There will even be a good chance for locals to see more of the sport on the region's doorstep in the coming months, with the 50th Multihull Brisbane to Gladstone Sailing Race.

Not quite the Sydney to Hobart but the 2014 edition will undoubtedly be a big one.

"It is not just the race, there is a cruising rally as well - so people are sailing with the boats from closer," Constance said.

While the local sailors will have to wait until Easter for the Brisbane to Gladstone, the diverse range of members will continue the club competition in the new year, including one with a lot of experience.

"Our oldest member is 90-odd, Jack Waters - he helped build the club," Moran said.
