Gladstone one of most expensive places for fuel
FUEL prices in Gladstone are up to 15 cents per litre too high, the RACQ believes.
RACQ figures have shown Gladstone is one of Queensland's most expensive cities to buy unleaded petrol.
Only Cairns had a higher average unleaded petrol price than Gladstone for 10 months of the year.
However, a five cent drop in the monthly average in November saw Gladstone's prices fall below Rockhampton's average.
RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said prices varied heavily throughout Gladstone service stations.
"The average cost of ULP in Gladstone is 146.6cpl. RACQ's Fair Fuel Price service says the price Gladstone motorists should be paying is 130.2cpl," she said.
"Prices currently vary between 130.2cpl and 151.9cpl, which makes it very important for Gladstone motorists to shop around."
She said after the wholesale oil price dropped more than 34cpl, unleaded across regional Queensland should have come down far more as retail margins have increased.
"Prices across regional Queensland are too high. The fall in the oil price should have led to a much greater fall in the price of ULP," Ms Smith said.
However, Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association chief Nic Moulis, who represents mid-sized outlets, said margins were very dependent on individual locations.
"Independents do change the commercial framework in the market.
"They don't operate off such a formulaic mother of business as the big oil companies. They're a lot closer to the community in my mind."
