Family forced to drink 'black' water that smells of fish

LAST week when the Guthrie family's water supply turned "black" for the umpteenth time since the family moved to Chinchilla three months ago, mother Cindy had had enough.

"How is the water safe to drink? (It) smells like a fish tank and is brown. Council say it's perfect," Mrs Guthrie posted, alongside photos of her household's discoloured tap water in a tumbler glass.

The mother of seven said even when the water coming through their taps wasn't brown in appearance, it was "cloudy looking" and "full of floaties".

In addition, any time anyone in their household drank the water straight from the tap rather than through the filter, they became incredibly sick - even the family dog.

"We're continually sick," Mrs Guthrie said.

"We've all had headaches, belly aches, vomiting; they're worse than labour pains.

"The kids have had to have days off school.

"Every time (our dog) drinks the water, he vomits. We put it through the purifier and then put ice in it to get him to drink it."

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said while dirty water flowing through a household's taps can be caused by any number of complex factors, the main contributing one is related to the water's chemistry.

"The cause of dirty water is more typically related to the chemistry of the water, excessive detention times, and/or poor flow patterns in the water supply distribution network, which can cause sediment and biofilms to build up over a period of time," Cr Brown said.

"In the Guthrie Family's case, tests were carried out on their water supply on the day the incident was reported to Council.

"The test results indicated that the water was safe to drink."

Mrs Guthrie said after she posted her complaint about the water on Facebook, countless other locals shared similar grievances about the town water.

"There's something going on here.

"I don't see why we're paying to use fish-tank water.

"We came from the coast three months ago and thought it was the best move for small children, but this is making life hard."
