WATCH: Volcano eruption captured on camera in Costa Rica

IT'S been closed to tourists for the past two years and for good reason - you don't want to come across an explosion like this while on holiday.

Turrialba volcano exploded earlier this week after years of increasing volcanic activity. Infrared cameras set up by Costa Rica's National University captured the single explosion and have gained attention all over the world.

The cameras show the slow build up to one single massive explosion that sent debris several kilometres into the air.

The volcano erupted three times in 2015 and the surrounding national park has been closed to visitors for several years.
