WATCH | 'Suspicious container' found at Barney Pt house fire

GLADSTONE's special criminal investigations branch is expected to begin investigating a fire that gutted a vacant house at Barney Point last night.

It's understood Gladstone Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) was called into investigate when emergency services became aware that the house at 37 O'Connell St was vacant.

Police said last night they were treating the house fire -- which threatened neighbouring residential buildings -- as suspicious, and investigations would begin at first light.

Station Officer Brad Rosenblatt, who was among those emergency crews first on the scene, said a "suspicious container" was recovered from the property in the aftermath of the fire.

One witness said the flames were "huge", with a separate witness, Nathan Counsel, saying he was a "little bit" worried his own house was under threat as the fire grew.

But more alarmingly, a man at the scene said his neighbour, who lives in adjoining block, head a "loud explosion" before the fire broke out.

It's not known who owns the house.

But it's understood the house has been vacant for almost a year.
