Warwick mourns teen killed in highway smash

THE Warwick community is reeling at the road crash death of 18-year-old Christopher Keirnan.

Mr Keirnan was only about 1.5km from his family's Allan home when his black Holden Commodore and a B-double truck collided head-on on the Cunningham Hwy.

Darling Downs district officer Inspector Mike Curtin said the impact occurred about 8.50pm on Wednesday near the intersection of Leslie Dam Rd about 9km from Warwick.

Insp. Curtin said it appeared Mr Keirnan's car was on the wrong side of the road before the crash happened.

Mr Keirnan died at the scene.

Paramedics took the 51-year-old Victorian truck driver to Warwick Base Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and shock.

He has since been discharged.

Emergency services had to divert traffic around the scene before it was cleared.

"We are just pleading with the public to proactively participate in safe driving practices so that we don't see a repetition of 2013 and 2014 which were horrific years for the Darling Downs district in terms of fatalities and lives lost," Inspector Curtin said.

There were 30 people who died in the region in 2013 and a further 23 lives lost last year.
