Warm spring days in Gladstone as weather sizzles out west

GLADSTONE is set to heat up for the next few days while record-breaking hot weather is forecast for north-west Queensland.

Gladstone is heading for a pleasant 30 degrees on Wednesday, followed by 31 degrees on Thursday.

Out west, if the temperature passes 40 degrees as predicted, it will be the earliest in September that such a high has been set.

Temperatures have a chance of going past that mark in the Urandangi, Julia Creek and Century Mine areas.

Gladstone is preparing for a warm spring season after winter featured some warmer-than-average days.

Over the next three months the outlook is similar to general August temperatures with a roughly normal rainfall season.

The average maximum temperature is expected to be above the longer term average.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, indications are that spring is going to be a warm one and a dry time of the year.

Rural Fire Service Queensland assistant commissioner Neil Gallant said there was the potential for fires across large areas as the danger rating climbed to very high to severe in some areas.

"Heightened fire danger is predicted for (today) and Thursday along most of the Queensland coast south of Mackay all the way south to the border. There is also heightened risk for all of inland Queensland," he said.

A combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds would make it difficult for firefighters to contain blazes.

A fire warning was out for the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego.
