Gympie to appear on millions of Nestle coffee jars

ALL over Australia, New Zealand, parts of Asia and throughout the South Pacific, hoards of people start every day with a product from Gympie.

"Roasted and Blended in Gympie," a new label will say, on millions of jars and tins of instant coffee from Nestle's Pine St factory.

"Three million of them so far," factory manager Andrew Younger said yesterday.

"We produce about 17,000 jars (of Blend 43) an hour," production operator Kent Bell said yesterday. "And that's just the 50g jars."

Beans come from all over the world - Colombia, Brazil, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam.

"If you went to all the coffee outlets and homes in Australia, you would probably find we make more than six out of every 10 cups of coffee in Australia," Mr Younger said.

The Gympie factory makes a $20 million a year contribution to the region's economy, including wages to about 175 staff and payments to about 100 local contractors and suppliers.
