Lawyer by day, metal band member by night

DANIEL Estrin is a lawyer by day and in a progressive metal band by night.

Daniel and four other members make up popular heavy/melodic band Voyager, set to rock the El Grande festival on March 21 and 22.

They haven't been to central Queensland before, but reckon fans are in for a treat.

"We are all about combining soaring melodies and heaviness," he said, chatting to Pulse ahead of the gig.

"It's kind of like '80s pop with a heavy edge. We are all about providing an entertaining live show that we don't take too seriously."

An immigration and administration lawyer at his own firm in Perth, Daniel is one of the founding members of Voyager.

"We started 15 years ago. There was a real lack of melodic heavy music in Perth and we decided that hole needs to be filled.

"We did our first album and we've got five albums under our belt now. We have a pretty decent following around the world."

Daniel is a violinist and pianist. The members sport a range of talents and are able to play many instruments.

"We have guitars, bass, vocals, drums and a keytar," he said.

"It's not a guitar, but it's not a keyboard. I got it as a birthday present and people love it."

The next big goal for Voyager is entering the highly popular Eurovision song contest.

"People are pushing to have Voyager there and it's been pretty crazy on social media," Daniel said.

Daniel also admitted he wasn't looking forward to the heat in Gladstone.

"Hopefully it won't be too humid in Gladstone or it will be a big sweat fest," he laughed. "But I hear you have a nice pier."

The El Grande Festival will be held at the Grand Hotel over two days. Tickets are available at http://elgrande.oztix.com.au/.
