Vote against land clearing is vote against reef: Trad

THE architect of controversial proposed land clearing laws says any MPs who vote against the bill are voting against the Great Barrier Reef.

Speaking to supporters at a rally outside parliament house in Brisbane, Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said restricting land clearing was needed to protect the reef.

The bill is expected to be debated and voted on in parliament this week.

The Opposition and crossbench Katter's Australian Party have vowed to vote against the bill.

KAP leader Robbie Katter dubbed the proposed laws "draconian" and said he would be negotiating with independent Billy Gordon to urge him to vote against them.

Shadow natural resources minister Andrew Cripps has called the bill "farmer bashing" and said it would prevent the industry maintaining pastures and building new infrastructure.

But Ms Trad said the LNP's "rhetoric did not meet the facts".

"What we need to do is fix this mess left to us by Campbell Newman and Tim Nicholls and we are determined to do that this week," she said.

Although the fate of the bill rests with independents Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government was committed to passing the laws.

"We will continue to fight right until the end," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk said her government believed "passionately" in the issue.

"We know, fundamentally, people are coming to Queensland for the Great Barrier Reef. And it is an obligation of each Member of Parliament to ensure that the health and the protection of that reef stays front and centre of everyone's thinking," she said.

The bill is expected to be voted on in parliament on Thursday. - ARM NEWSDESK
