Von Einem loses nail-biting gold medal playoff

TABLE TENNIS: Samuel von Einem has won Australia's first medal in table tennis at the Paralympics since 1984.

Von Einem was forced to settle for silver after going down in five sets to world No.1 Florian van Ecker, from Belgium, in the gold medal playoff.

"I've never beaten Florian before, I've never run him that close before, so I'm really quite happy with that performance,” he said.

"I just wanted to get a medal really.

"When I made the final I was so, so happy.

"I wanted to have a red-hot crack at gold, and I feel like I've done that.”

Von Einem said it had been a long time since Australia has medalled in the event.

"I'm disappointed not to get the gold but silver is still great,” he said.
