Volunteers do 'noice' job

DUBBED Gladstone's own “Kath and Kim”, Harbour Festival volunteers Kath and Lyn will no doubt be having some chardonnay to celebrate all their hard work.

Kath Neilson has been a volunteer at the festival for 11 years, while Lyn Powell has been helping out for six years.

For Kath, it was a friend who introduced her to volunteering.

“I was asked to give a friend a lift down to the festival so they could help out,” Lyn said.

“Since then, I've been coming back each year ever since.”

For Lyn, helping began after she heard the festival was calling for more volunteers.

“I saw an advert in the newspaper asking for volunteers and decided I'd give it a go,” she said.

When Kath and Lyn were asked what they liked the most about the festival, they both said fun with friends.

“We love the fun of the festival,” they said.

“It gives us a chance to catch up with old friends and have a laugh.”

This fun is what keeps them sailing back to the festival every year.

“We keep coming back simply for the fun of it,” they said.

“The group has great comradeship and everyone has the same passion for the festival.”

Thanks to volunteers like Kath and Lyn, the festivities will start this weekend.

The festival will take place at the Gladstone Marina from Sunday, April 17 to Sunday, April 24.
