Volunteer Grants initiative to help 5000 organisations

ALMOST 5000 not-for-profit organisations will share in $16 million as part of the Federal Government's Volunteer Grants initiative.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that grants of between $1000 and $5000 would be distributed under the program.

She said the grants would help 4800 community organisations and more than 166,000 volunteers purchase much-needed equipment or as a contribution towards training courses, background checks and transport costs of volunteers with disability who are unable to drive.

The most commonly requested items for use by volunteer organisations are computers, fuel, and training courses.

Organisations such as the Country Women's Association will use the grant to purchase kitchen equipment and marquees, which will help their volunteers organise events to build support networks in rural and remote communities.
