Volunteer dies on last leg of ‘Walk for Lynda’

IT WAS supposed to be a victory lap for Brett and Trevor "Jack" Otto, but tragedy struck on the Walk for Lynda on Wednesday.

The father and son team are walking from Gladstone to Kingaroy to raise awareness for melanoma in rural Queensland, in memory of the late Lynda Geiger who lost her life to the disease last year.

Support teams had been aiding the pair to manage traffic on the road and as they came into the South Burnett, the Murgon SES volunteered to help.

But at the time the team was due to start their walk on Wednesday morning, one of the SES support crew, Allan Jensen, had failed to turn up.

Later they discovered Mr Jensen had died from a heart attack that morning.

"He was about to put his boots on and come join us and he had the heart attack," Brett said.

"It was going to be his first day with us."

The duo both knew Mr Jensen well and were shocked by the news.

"It's pretty hard for the SES people who all worked with him so closely," Brett said.

He said they planned to wear black armbands on the final part of their walk to remember Allan as they made their way to Kingaroy.

The walk will finish this Saturday, with the final push from Crawford to Memorial Park in Kingaroy.

"We have raised a lot of awareness of melanoma through rural Queensland," Brett said.

"I think we have changed a lot of minds about this disease.

"When you walk from town to town it starts a conversation."
