School volleyball teams excel at state championships
GLADSTONE State High School volleyball teams brought home top honours with five teams making the top four at the Junior Schools State Championships.
The teams played from October 19-21 in Brisbane, with 230 teams from 71 school tussling for titles.
The Year 8 girls team won gold with a two-set win over Nambour High.
Head volleyball coach Brian van der Weide said the girls went through the three-day championships undefeated to be crowned the winners in the Year 8 elite section.
Team captain Skye Alexander was named MVP of the tournament.
The Year 9 girls elite team finished with the bronze medal and the Year 9 division one team finished fourth.
The Year 10 elite team was also fourth.
Year 9 GSHS boys competed in the elite Honours Division at Junior Schools Cup for the first time.
"The boys had an outstanding competition, only dropping three sets on their way to the gold medal match where they faced Browns Plains," Van der Weide said.
They won in straight sets.
Team captain Clayton McDiarmid was named tournament MVP.
