Three simple tips for being a happier couple

WHAT are the fundamental things happy couples do, and do well, to stay happy in a healthy relationship?

The answer lies in the common sense, warm and kind attributes we all gravitate towards but can forget to do in the hustle and bustle of daily life, when stress and conflict wears you down.

These are the basics that happy couples hold dear, and maintain, through good times and bad, year after year in their "happily ever after" relationships.

Smile and be nice

Happy couples enjoy each other's company and laugh and smile together a lot.

And even when they are mad, they find a way to be approachable, leaning in, listening and staying calm.

Regardless of how your partner is behaving, happy couples are as nice as they can be to one another in all circumstances because they know it will rub off.

It's hard to be mean, unkind or abrasive to someone who is being genuinely caring and kind, even when they are still kind of mad!

Fix what you can, be the partner you want to have, and watch the positive effect that has.

It's how you say what you say

How couples speak to one another is as important as what they say to one another.

People respond well to a soft tone and immediately get hostile or defensive towards a harsh one.

A sweet tone as well as a sweet approach will minimise conflicts and make the daily grind less difficult and just more pleasant. Truly listen.

As important as it is to communicate one's own needs, it's equally crucial to listen too.

When couples are disconnected, bickering or outright hostile, the tendency to listen is a low point. Grow together

Happy couples don't sit back and passively expect that they will always stay the same and that their interests will always naturally align. They pursue dreams together.

Extend yourself

Happy couples reach out to each other in good and bad times.

A strong and happy relationship is built on two independent, fulfilled, unique individuals who choose each other to share their life with.
