Virgin the most punctual airline at Gladstone airport
VIRGIN Australia was the most punctual airline for departures and arrivals between Gladstone and Brisbane in December, according to a new report.
The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics Domestic Airline on Time Performance Data December 2012, released today, found Virgin Australia was more punctual than QantasLink in departures and arrivals.
QantasLink had 120 of 166 planes depart on time (72.3% punctual) and 110 of 152 planes arrive on time (72.4%).
Virgin Australia had 96 of 108 planes depart on time (78.8%) and 91 out of 108 arrive on time (84.3%).
The report didn't contain good news for Brisbane Airport, with figures showing it had the record for the worst arrival times in Australia.
Only 69.2% of arriving flights landed within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, with as many as 92 flights a day being delayed.
Despite the dismal result, Brisbane Airport Corporation media manager Leonie Vandeven remained upbeat, telling News Ltd a new traffic management tool was already reducing delays.
Known as Metron, the system became operational on December 19, three weeks later than scheduled.
It works by keeping aircraft on the ground at departure points to avoid them being placed in holding patterns.
Departing passengers fared better, with 78.9% of flights taking off from Brisbane on time, which was behind Melbourne (81.2), the Gold Coast (79), Canberra (85.8), and Cairns (88), but better than Sydney (78.3) and Perth (76).
