CHRISTMAS started with a bang at the Boyne Island Library, where more than 200 children took part in an hour-long annual Christmas Tree Extravaganza on Wednesday.

Volunteers and library staff helped kids make decorations to put on the library tree, while St Francis Catholic Primary School entertained the crowd as they waited for the "special guest" to arrive.

Organiser Veronica Shaw was thrilled with the event.

"Santa dropping by is always a highlight and a wonderful way to get kids excited about Christmas," she said.

"We love that our tree is made by the community and we can take time to celebrate Christmas together."
