Vegan only rentals: Meat eaters barred

The rental ads are very specific about the sort of person the landlord wants: vegans only, or in some cases, vegetarians are also allowed.

Not eating animal-based products, including eggs and dairy, has suddenly become a desirable trait in a potential renter.

Whereas once property owners didn't want bikies, the unemployed and people with pets, now meat eating has made some potential tenants undesirable.

One Gumtree ad for a family home in the southeastern suburb of Frankston, Melbourne, sternly states the strict rules, Channel 9's A Current Affair revealed: "4 bedroom house for rent to a Vegan family in Frankston.

"House is only for vegan family and no other food/beverages allowed in the house."

The house ad, since taken down from Gumtree, is not an isolated example. Gumtree has plenty of ads for vegan or vegetarian property rentals.

Take the furnished room going for $190 a week in an already established house in Melbourne's Glen Waverley.

One room in a three-bedroom house is available only for one or two people who are "vegetarian and clean".

Then there's the self-contained studio for $1050 a month near the city's Mentone train station. And a two-bedroom shared apartment in Sydney's Burwood labelled as "vegetarian/vegan".

Between asterisks at the top of the ad are the words: "Only for Vegetarian/Vegan, Non-Smoker and Non-Alcoholic Couple/Individual".

At a house with an organic garden in Greater Dandenong, the landlords are less didactic, merely advertising for "vegan/vegetarian friendly".

And at Balwyn North, the prospective renter of a furnished $210 a week room "must like vegetarian cooking and gardening" and also "must be employed".

Further, the next tenant is told, "we share cleaning and garden maintenance to keep our home feeling and looking great".

Meat eaters told Channel 9 they believed the vegan stipulations were discrimination.
