Video: Variety of work a plus for QAL employees

TRADESMEN Greg Meyer and Craig Holt are among a group of Queensland Alumina Ltd workers who have celebrated 35 years at the company.

The variance of the job and the changes over the years have made for a satisfying workplace for the men, both of whom are from Gladstone.

Mr Meyer, an electrical tradesman, is still handling tools and prefers it that way.

"I'm a very hands-on person," he said.

"I enjoy liaising and interacting with other people, and maintaining machinery and equipment."

He said he had seen many changes over the years, from how the plant operated to the increase in personal protective equipment.

Mr Holt, who is a maintenance planner with no time for retirement, said the biggest change was the increase in women in the workplace.

"It's picked up in the last five to 10 years and they make very good tradesmen," he said.

"In electrics there are so many options …to get that same coverage you'd have to go to a dozen different companies outside of a place like QAL."

Craig Holt, Dennis Sullivan, Glen Fehlhaber, Greg Meyer, Michael Mitton and Greg Thompson have worked at QAL since starting as apprentices.
