Vandals blamed for lighting fire on Black Harry Island
A DELIBERATELY lit fire took hold on Black Harry Island, near the Calliope River Substation, on Friday afternoon.
Early in the afternoon authorities had been confident the fire was surrounded by enough cleared land to be safe.
Mike Sibley from the Port Curtis Royal Fire Brigade Service said the fire had been the work of arsonists.
"It's vandals at work again," he said.
Mr Sibley said vandals were stretching the patience and resources available to volunteer firefighters.
"A lot of people think we get paid to take care of these fires," he said. "But we volunteer our time to contain them."
The fire was expected to burn throughout the night.
