Historic steam train vandalised with fire extinguisher

A COWARDLY act of vandalism was another low blow for the disappointed volunteers of Southern Downs Steam Railway.

A historic 1930 carriage attached to a popular steam train was broken into Wednesday night and sprayed with white dry powder from the onboard fire extinguisher.

It's the third time the station has faced the acts of thieves and vandals in the past six weeks.

On a previous occasion a GPS and a heat sensor used on the bearings of the steam engine were stolen.

Volunteer and cleaner Gene Adams entered the carriage yesterday morning to find a thick layer of white powder throughout the cabin.

Fellow volunteer Lindsay Mills said he had cleaned the train the day before and suspected someone had seen him leave without locking the last carriage.

Mr Mills said all the volunteers were heavily disappointed.

Fortunately this mess can be cleaned up and the volunteers will have it as good as new for its trip tomorrow.

"We've got to have this carriage ready for when we go to Wallangarra," Mr Mills said.

Police carry out regular night patrols in the area and will continue to do so.

Acting officer-in-charge Lisa Self said she was disappointed to see vandals targeting community organisations.

"We're working on trying to solve the crimes at the moment," she said.
