V8 series leader rockets to win in Tasmania 400

CRAIG Lowndes was first off the line, and the first to cross it at the finish of race three in the Tyrepower Tasmania 400 at Symmons Plains yesterday.

The Holden driver (pictured) won the 200km race by a comfortable 5.3secs to extend his lead in the 2014 V8 Supercars championship to 70 points.

Teammate and defending champion Jamie Whincup finished second to leapfrog Fabian Coulthard into second place on the standings.

With each driver required to take two pit stops to take on the necessary fuel for the 84 laps, Whincup elected to dive into the pits on lap one, but said he was no match for his Red Bull teammate.

"Lowndesy had an absolute rocket ... he was too quick today," the five-time champion said.

James Courtney edged out Will Davison and Coulthard for third. Whincup won both races contested over 100km on Saturday, making up for his poor start to the season in Adelaide.
