US offers might of its military for Russian Winter Olympics

THE US has offered the might of its military to the Russian government amid fears for security at next month's Winter Olympics.

In a statement released this week, the Pentagon said Russia had its "full support" and offered air and navy assets if required.

The offer followed the release of a video by a Chechen militant group which vowed to give those attending the games "a present for the innocent Muslim blood being spilled all around the world".

Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to respond to the US offer.

He told reporters on the weekend he would do "whatever it takes" to protect athletes and visitors at Sochi.
