THREE Little Birds watching a sunset might be Sally-Ann Solomon's ticket to fame and fortune.
The landscape artist has entered two pieces of work in the 39th Rio Tinto Alcan Martin Hanson Memorial Award for the second year in a row.
But, she says, her eyes aren't just on the prize.
"I'm lucky that I have a well-behaved seven-month-old that allows me to sit around and play all day," she said.
"I just like the excitement of entering."
Ms Solomon began working on her submissions two months ago, using acrylic paint to immortalise the local sunset.
"My first painting is an interpretation of Spinnaker Park and the second is another sunset of the same area looking down from Auckland Point," she said.
"Both of these works were created with the exhibition in mind. I noticed last year there were a lot of local landscapes and so I've continued along the same lines."
Ms Solomon will be entering her works into Section 1 - easel paintings.
Her pieces of artwork are being unwrapped along with others in a flurry of excitement at Gladstone Regional Art Gallery.
Distinguished artists from as far as Tasmania, Western Australia as well as local names and indigenous talent will be showcased from November 8-December 11.
Cultural projects officer Di Paddick said this time of year felt like Christmas.
"In every new box lies a surprise. It's a great time of year," she said.
It takes six months in preparation and a small army of volunteers, but the reward is evident.
Maddie Cook from Gladstone Regional Art Gallery said more entries were expected in 2014 than ever before, and the prize money had been increased to match the interest.
"We are expecting over 300 entries for this year," she said.
"A really exciting new aspect is the QAL People's Choice Award, where the public can vote in all four categories."
The exhibition will launch on November 8, with the presentation of awards taking place at 6pm.
