Card with vague address makes it to old mate

'JIMMY Harris. Up the hill near South Gladstone State School'.

A Christmas card with that address on it has made it to the home of Gladstone residents Jimmy and Bernice Harris.

"Over the years I have had a few complaints about the mail delivery service in Gladstone, but this time I have nothing but praise for their effort," Mr Harris said.

"It's just so lovely that they didn't just return to sender and they went beyond the call of duty."

An old school friend of Mr Harris's from the 1950s sent the card.

When he last heard from 72-year-old Graham Dicker, Mr Harris lived at 65 Ann St, behind the Gladstone school.

"It was 1973 when we moved from Ann to Beale St, but we obviously forgot to tell Graham," he said.

"I went to South Gladstone school with (him) back in the 1950s and we'd been best mates," he said.

"We both moved to Brisbane (where he still lives) in 1958 and the last time I saw him was in 1961, so his Christmas card came as quite a surprise."

Mr Harris knows first-hand just how hard this kind of service is to come by, after working as a telegram boy and later, a trained postal clerk himself.

"I was a postal boy for years, working out of North Rocky, Biloela, and Jericho," he said.

"I've seen all sorts of things from stolen parcels and missing packages and finding a letter recipient happens once in a blue moon."

Mr Dicker and Mr Harris are now in contact with each other and plan to catch up soon.
